28 Shades of Grey

Welcome to February, 28 days out of the Nashvillian winter where the sun refuses to shine.

Throughout history, mankind has done its best to spruce up February with notable holidays like Valentine's Day, President's Day, Black History Month, Groundhog's Day, and Charles Dicken's Day, but just because you put a fancy hat on an ugly tabby doesn't make your house cat any more fun to look at. Yes, I just compared February to an ugly house cat, and speaking truthfully, I don't feel the least bit bad about it. Seriously people, there's a reason leap year only shows its face once every four years. Fitting words to describe this month long rain cloud are dull, doleful, bleak, bland, and somber... the list could go on and on, but I don't have a thesaurus on hand, so I'll digress.

I'm not sure why the weather pattern dictates that February must be perennially dreary, but amidst these 28 shades of grey, there must be a sliver lining. Right?

In an attempt to find a sense of happiness amidst the achromatic scale, here are some goals I have in February to take my mind off of the blah.

  • Accompany the Fellowship of the Ring to their journey's end
  • Learn how to develop 35mm film and prints
  • Team up with my crew to produce a good green film for the 48 Hour Film Project
  • Make my first trip to the coastal town of Savannah, GA
  • See JIMMY EAT WORLD at The Cannery!
  • Run the Fangtastic 5k to help raise money for Vanderbilt Children's Hospital (Just decided this)

If you really think about it, maybe grey isn't so bad after all. Some great things are grey. Dolphins are grey. Wolves are grey. Elephants are grey. Mercury is grey. My favorite Lipscomb hoodie is grey.

And in the end, enduring these 28 shades of grey makes the colors of the spring mean so much more.

Who knows, the sun may even mix things up and give us a shine at some point in the month to come. Here's hoping. One day down, twenty-seven more to go.
